Samsung Galaxy S5 : All Leaks and Rumours (Updated)

By on Sunday, January 05, 2014

Samsung Galaxy S5 is currently the hottest Smartphone which is expected to launched this year. There's no official word yet on the arguably the most popular flagship android but as usual there are lots of rumours around and leaks are surfacing every time.  We will be bringing you those rumours, together with our opinion on how much of this is expected to be true or should you take them with a grain of salt!
We're constantly searching the web for all the latest on Samsung's next flagship phone, and based on those we have create a dossier for you to know what can be expected from the new Samsung Galaxy S5.

Samsung Galaxy S5: Release Date and Price

All the flagship phones have an annual cycle so it easier to predict when can the new iteration of the device will be announced. So keeping this in mind, Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to be launched in March 2014. However, according to many analyst's prediction the galaxy S4 did not do as well as company expected, so Samsung is expected to launch the fifth iteration of its flagship Galaxy S phone a bit early.

What's Hot:  Launch around Late February / Early March possibly at MWC
Rumors are going around which suggest that Samsung's 2014 Flagship Samsung Galaxy S5 might be launched during MWC 2014. There has been various rumours from various circles and all point towards the release date sometime between January to March. We do not expect the device to be launched at CES 2014, but Mobile world Congress 2014 at Barcelona might be a possibility. However, even if the device does not gets released at MWC, we expect it to be launched within a few days after that.

Samsung Galaxy S5: Design

This is one which has been in past criticised heavily. This has also been the segment which has seen some great engineering from Samsung. Much debate has been made around Samsung's continued use of plastic vs. metal in the industrial design of its smartphones and tablets. Well Samsung has always said that it keeps the weight down, it is more shock absorbent and easily available material. The weight argument is an interesting one. If you compare the all-plastic Galaxy S 4 to the all-metal HTC One, there's a difference of 13 grams. Whether plastic / polycarbonate, glass or aluminium is best ultimately depends on individual's choice but S4 was a beautifully designed phone with subtle innovations which improved everything from S3 slightly. In 2013, we had phones like HTC one and IPhone showing what cool designs can be. Sony tried to differentiate it by offering dust and water proofing. LG caused a stir with back placed buttons. With other OEM's Stepping up the game, Samsung has to take notice otherwise it can lose the crown of android king very quickly.
What’s Hot : All Metal Galaxy S5
So, is 2014, going to be the year that we can see something drastically different from Samsung? Well the rumours and leaks do point in that direction. It has been reported that one variant of Galaxy S5 will be launched in all metal. This makes sense as we do expect some sort of delays, seeing the volume of phones Samsung is expected to ship. Android Geeks also reported that Samsung Galaxy S5 will be sporting an all-aluminium design which is being referred to as Design 3.0. Folks at Android Geeks were able to get hold of trusted source close to the South Korean phone maker, who wanted to remain anonymous. He confirmed that Samsung will be launching its 2014 flagship phone in a “premium” all metal design which he referred as Design 3.0. More fuel to this fire was added by multiple reports from different sources. EMS One also confirmed that Samsung Galaxy S5 will be indeed launching with an all metal design. Also, Korean News site ET News also made the similar claims which made the metal design a real possibility.

Samsung Galaxy S5 - LEAK

Also, Photos have started to emerge of the new Galaxy S5 device. Photos of Metal Samsung Galaxy S5 have leaked and currently ad more fuel to all the Galaxy S5 going metal fire. But before you get all excited, here is an another news. ET News has claimed that all the buzz about were only partially true and metal device is in fact a new series from Samsung Galaxy F.

Samsung Galaxy S5:  Display

Another hot topic of discussion. Samsung has constantly upped the ante with their flagship phones and this year should not be any different. So what should be expected from Galaxy S5 this year?

What's Hot: 5.25 " QHD Display(2560 X144) with 560 PPI
Samsung themselves have given us a hint about what to expect for Display of Galaxy S5.  In Samsung’s Analyst day event at Korea, they pointed out that their flagship in 2014 will have an AMOLED display with QHD (2560 X 1440) resolution.

Seeing that Samsung wants to launch 4K on mobile displays by 2015, it seems likely that we will have QHD display in Galaxy S5 this time.

We had previous reports which stated that Mass production of QHD AMOLED screens for Galaxy S5 has already began.

There were another rumours as well which cited Samsung display CEO Kinam king saying the Galaxy S5 will have a QHD (2560X1440) screen with 560 PPI. Additionally We had reports of couple of Benchmarks which had conflicting reports about the screen. Galaxy S5's specifications were first  leaked on Antutu benchmark.  The device mentioned in the benchmark is SM-G900F, rumored to be next Galaxy S5. The device has 1080p display which surprised many as S5 is expected to be launched with QHD resolution.  However, another Mysterious Samsung device leaked on GFX benchmark as well. This time the device is SM-G900S and had a WQHD display

At this point, all the rumours point that Samsung is going to slightly increase the size of display for Galaxy S5 but they do not want to encroach on Galaxy Note 3’s territory. So 5.25” seems as likely choice. Regarding QHD , LG is rumoured to launch G3 around the same time as S5 and will have a QHD screen and Samsung would not like to lose out  against their Korean rivals in specifications battle

Samsung Galaxy S5: Processor

This is an interesting section. What the Benchmarks reveal and what we expect the device to finally have is quite different.
What's Hot: Exynos Chipset 64 Bit or True 8 Core with HMP
As mentioned earlier, the Specifications of Galaxy S5 were leaked in both Antutu and GFX benchmarks. Both these lekas point towards the Galaxy S5 being powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 clocked with 2.5 GHz. Well, we do believe that Samsung is not going to get out of Specs war and release S5 with same processor as Note III.  Even though Snapdragon 800/805 are most powerful mobile chips in production, we believe  that Samsung Galaxy S5 will be launched (atleast the international variants) with an Exynos chipset. So what are the facts corroborating this?

Firstly, we have to thank Samsung themselves for adding fuel to the fire. The company not only announced that it planned to bring 4GB’s of RAM to smartphones in 2014 but it also teased an Exynos announcement for CES 2014 in Las Vegas via their twitter account. Well , Our Guess is, it could be either Exynos 64 Bit Chipsets to match Apple's A7 or Exynos Heterogeneous Multi-process or update which will make all cores active at once making it a true octa core device like Mediatek MT6592.

Secondly, according to a report published on Korea Herald, Executives at ARM were reported saying
they had meeting with Samsung officials to discuss the ARM 64-bit chip, which is expected to be used in Samsung's smartphone next year. This again can be saved till Note IV launch but Samsung would not want to appear  loosing on specs battle with Apple.

Samsung Galaxy S5: Camera

There has been a few leeks regarding the camera module that would be used in the Galaxy S5. We had heard initial rumours that the device will be launched with a Carl Zeiss Optics but later leaks didn't seem to corroborate this. There was a report on South Korean ET News which stated that Galaxy S5 will be launched with 16 MP camera which will feature the same OIS tech as used on LG G2. This would be an much needed bump required for Samsung's flagship camera which were already great.

What's Hot : 16 MP Camera with ISOCELL sensor and OIS
Samsung also played some part here by creating more excitement in the camera module for Galaxy S5. Samsung announced a new CMOS image sensor dubbed ISOCELL and also told analysts the tech would be appearing in phones during 2014 and 2015.
BSI to ISOCELL
This new sensor isolates individual pixels which minimizes electrical crosstalk between them, which in turn leads to higher colour fidelity, for sharper, richer images.
Additionally, an imager designed with ISOCELL can feature a 20 percent wider chief ray angle (CRA), reducing the height of the camera module. This makes it suitable for slim and small form factor mobile devices with challenging low z-height requirements.

Samsung Galaxy S5: Operating System

Expect No surprises here. There were previous rumours that Galaxy S5 will be launched in Android as well as Tizen (Samsung's Own OS) but we do not expect this to be case here. Also Android 5.0 Key lime pie would be most likely not launched until end of year. So, we expect Galaxy S5 to be running Android 4.4 out of the box with their Touchwiz skin on top. It would be interesting to see if Samsung tidies up the touchwiz interface a bit and make it more clutter free.
