Apple’s share of the global tablet market has fallen from two-thirds to a half in the past six months, market researchers say, raising the stakes for its new iPad mini against a slew of new challengers using Google’s Android and Microsoft's Windows software.
Apple is watching its dominance of the global tablet market erode, with iPad shipments accounting for 50.4 percent of the total third quarter tablet shipments of 2012 (July-September), down from 59.7 percent during the same period in 2011. The tablet market grew by more than a bump between the second and third quarter of 2012, according to recent data gathered by the International Data Corporation (IDC).
Globally, 27.8 million tablets sold in Q3, growing the market 49.5 percent year over year and 6.7 percent from Q2. Android tablets had a winning quarter, IDC reported, while the world's biggest slate maker saw its share slump significantly.
"Android shipments, led by Samsung and Amazon, surged during the quarter, at the expense of Apple, which saw its share slip notably during the quarter," IDC noted.
